About Nancy & A to Zoo:Nancy began working with animals at the age of 13, when she volunteered at Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. After high school, she worked with sick and injured seals and sea lions at the California Marine Mammal Center in Marin. While studying zoology at Humboldt State University, she directed a tutorial program designed for under-privileged children, run by Youth Educational Services and served as president of their board of directors.
Her zoo career began in 1985 as petting zoo supervisor and “late keeper” for the Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, CA. For the next 5 years, she held many positions at Sequoia Park Zoo, including relief keeper and secretary of the board of directors of the Sequoia Park Zoological Society. Nancy also cared for animals at the Humane Society of Humboldt County. In 1990 Nancy was hired as a full-time zoo keeper at the Oakland Zoo in Oakland, CA. A progressive and privately owned zoo, Oakland encouraged keepers to use their skills and experience to improve the lives of the animals with enrichment, responsive care, teamwork, and on-site veterinary care. At Oakland, Nancy was able to attend conferences, research, and work in a variety of capacities with a number of animals including birds, reptiles, hoof stock, and primates. She worked closely with veterinarians on a number of procedures, and has a keen eye for spotting illness and injury. After moving to the San Jose area, Nancy started A to Zoo in 2004.
